How it all began
Personal experience of the founders and others involved with Allergistics UK, combined with UK figures released in 2004 that 18,000 first or new episodes of asthma are being presented to GPs every week, convinced us that there is a huge need to address some of the causes or contributing factors to asthma and allergies.
One of the founders of Allergistics UK, Janice Percy, suffered badly with asthma from her early 20s. Her condition worsened over the next 15 years, to the point where she was frequently hospitalised, was registered disabled, and took high levels of steroids just to function. In 2002 Jan read an article in The Times regarding a four year study into the dangers surrounding house dust, and how during investigations it became apparent that the dust mite was responsible for indoor allergen levels several hundred times higher than those recommended by the World Health Organisation. And so began the research which resulted in the development of Allergistics UK.
