The Problem
Global pollution is a serious problem, and is justifiably high on the agenda of politicians, health professionals and other experts worldwide. The link between pollution and health problems, particularly asthma, is strong; and measures are being taken globally to reduce pollution, such as reducing the use and improving the efficiency of fossil fuels in order to reduce the harmful emissions produced when they burn, and thereby improve people’s health.
There are many reports on the dangers of inhaling outdoor pollutants, but indoor pollutants have traditionally been less investigated. However, this is changing, and referrals to the poor quality of indoor air have been becoming more frequent.
The house dust mite lives in dust, and is responsible for producing the number one indoor allergen. 85% of all people with asthma are proven to be allergic to house dust, due to the presence of dust mites.
Dust mites thrive in warm, dark, humid places. Mattresses and soft furnishings are their preferred habitat, and the average mattress is home to millions of dust mites.
Most people spend more of their day in their homes than in any other single place, and the majority of this time is spent asleep, in bed, in close proximity to the dust mite’s favourite habitat.
Asthma is the most serious of the conditions brought about and aggravated by the presence of dust mites. However, a whole range of other conditions and ill effects are suffered by people when they are exposed to dust mites, including eczema, sinus problems, runny nose, itching, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, wheezing, broken sleep and fatigue.
House dust is of course unavoidable, even in the cleanest home, and therefore action must be taken to reduce and control the levels of dust mites in the areas people have most contact with. Countless medical and scientific studies have proved beyond doubt, that by reducing the allergens caused by the dust mite, a whole range of adverse symptoms are significantly reduced.
